What Does Islamic Education Teach Children?

Islamic education, also referred to as Islamic studies, is an educational system that focuses on the teachings and principles of Islam. It covers a wide range of topics including religious philosophy, Quranic understanding and interpretation, ethics, and history. Islamic education encourages children to live in accordance with their faith.

Students learn about the prophets Muhammad (peace be upon him), Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all). They are taught the importance of prayer and fasting, as well as principles of justice, charity and mercy. What’s more, Islamic education also teaches children about the history of Islam and its culture.

Islamic studies provide students with a deeper understanding of the Quran and Sunnah (the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings). Students learn to analyze and interpret the texts, derive lessons from them, understand how they relate to their own lives and appreciate their spiritual significance.

In addition, Islamic education teaches children about Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and its four major schools of thought. The students are also taught about the life of the Prophet Muhammad, his example and how to emulate him.

In essence, Islamic education is designed to teach children how to be true Muslims who not only follow religious principles but also live within an Islamic framework. It teaches them to show respect for their elders and treat others with kindness and compassion. It encourages students to value knowledge and practice the Islamic values of justice, honesty, bravery, and perseverance.

Furthermore, Islamic education stresses the importance of developing moral character by emphasizing good behavior in public and private life. It teaches children to practice humility and courtesy while maintaining respect for all people regardless of their faith.

Schools for Islamic Study

When placed within the broader Australian educational context, Islamic education is taught within dedicated schools that offer programs that are based on the Qur’an and Hadith. These schools teach a variety of subjects, including Arabic language and literature, Islamic religious studies, mathematics and science.

These schools function to provide an environment where children can develop their understanding of the Islamic faith while gaining academic success. The aim is to give children a strong foundation in both traditional Islamic values and modern knowledge so they can develop a holistic understanding of the world.

The curriculum taught at these schools focuses heavily on the teachings of the Qur’an, which guides moral conduct and upright living. It also teaches students to have faith in Allah and strive to seek knowledge. Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of their faith, learn how to live following Islamic teachings and become better Muslims. The Arabic language is also studied, which helps students gain a deeper appreciation of the language of the Quran.

As an example, Ilim Islamic College in Melbourne, Australia, teaches courses on Muslim ethics and Qur’anic studies; this is to ensure that students are well-versed in the basics of their faith. It also offers classes on Islamic history and culture, which help children develop an understanding of how Islam has evolved.

Apart from religious lessons, Islamic education also focuses on developing the skills necessary for secular life. Subjects such as mathematics, English, science and social studies are taught as part of a broad curriculum. Islamic schools also often emphasize physical education, encouraging children to participate in activities that promote healthy lifestyles.

Overall, Islamic education is about more than just teaching religion – it’s about providing children with the skills and knowledge they need to lead successful, fulfilling lives. It encourages critical thinking and an appreciation of different perspectives, while also emphasizing the importance of respect for one’s faith and others. By providing an environment in which children can grow academically, emotionally and spiritually, Islamic education provides a strong foundation for young people to become compassionate, productive members of their communities.
